Justice Sonia Sotomayor

K-state university has a series of lectures called the Landon Lecture Series, and many notable speakers have participated in this series.

I attended my first lecture this afternoon and the speaker was Justice of the US Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor.

The lecture was highly enjoyable, discussed many aspects of the US Supreme Court and the overall judical system, she talked about a day in the life of a Supreme Court Justice .. which includes loads of reading apparently!

I want to share three points with you guys, what you read below will not be EXACTLY what she said .. my memory is well .. ahm .. yeah. Anyways …

First point, she was asked about her advice to students wanting to pursue a career in law:

Career and passion are two separate things. Combine them to achieve the best in life, no matter how absurd and uncommon. She’s met accountants who actually enjoy book-keeping! Stock brokers! Taxi drivers! They like what they do. And believe me, if you like what you do, you’ll do it good and have the spotlight pointed at you.

Second point, when asked about education:

We live in a society where the poorest people get the poorest education, and that is unacceptable and has to stop. I’ll add my personal comment to that: In Kuwait, we have the money, no ones poor, but where’s the top-notch education? Think about it.

Third and last point, when asked about the roles of universities around the United States and the world:

I believe the role of a university is to bring students outside their comfort zone and have them experience new things! And to you students, broaden your knowledge as much as possible. Engineering students, there’s nothing wrong with taking an economics class! Medicine students, get a law degree! You never know it might come in handy if you face a malpractice suit!

So that pretty much sums it up .. nice series and hopefully I’ll share future lectures with you guys if time permits and if I’m not getting fucked up by calculus. Ahem. Thanks.
